I absolutely loved reading this book. It's in a novel persona, but it's a comprehensive history about the fire that destroyed La Fenice, Venice's famous, magnificent and old theater.I've visited Venice several times, so I was familiar with the different venues described in this book.I've had the additional advantage of visiting Venice before and after the fire at La Fenice.But I didn't know much about the fundraising for the rebuilding of La Fenice and the various, warring factions involved. It was great sport (and also interesting, troubling and revealing) to learn about all the various characters involved in all aspects of the fundraising, rebuilding and everything and everyone else connected with la Fenice and Venezia itself.Of course, it was most interesting to read about Ezra Pound (the great poet, Fascist and anti-Semite among other qualities) and his life in Venice with his long-time (50 years long) lover Olga. Pound had a daughter with Olga, and even she had connections to the rebuilding of La Fenice.Everyone got involved in the rebuilding, and everyone is introduced with great detail. The City of Venice, politicians, frauds, a pair of electricians (guilty of arson), an exterminator, a pretentious woman who thought she had great power and influence, an American plastic surgeon along with many, many other fascinating characters.I'm out going to relate the history - but I will heartily recommend this book. it's a delight; the literary quality and the writing is evident and quite outstanding and I cannot imagine that readers will find otherwise. For anyone interested in a snapshot of Venetian elite living, although not quite. Venice seen by an American writer who was able yo cominglel with expatriates as well as a select number of Venetian upper crust. Very well done vignettes on Venetian history as promptef by the fire of the opera house. I found it good and absorbing reading but I am a historian .
